Horizon Elementary continues to grow its toolbox of strategies to help every learner engage deeply with learning. This week, EL teacher Mrs. Hoff led Horizon staff in professional learning focused on the Jigsaw Chunking strategy, a powerful approach designed to help students better comprehend and engage with text.
Jigsaw Chunking gives students an opportunity to break a text into manageable sections, work collaboratively to make meaning of what they have read, and then engage in meaningful dialogue with their peers. The strategy is particularly helpful for English Learners, but it provides benefits for all learners by increasing engagement, strengthening comprehension, and creating more opportunities for students to talk about their thinking.
Mrs. Hoff modeled the strategy for staff and gave teachers an opportunity to experience it firsthand. Staff jumped right in, collaborating, discussing the text, and experiencing what the strategy could look and feel like from a student's perspective.
The room was filled with great engagement, conversation, and collaboration—exactly the kind of learning we want to create for our Horizon learners!
