Math is happening all around us—and in Mrs. Brink’s first-grade classroom, students are building their mathematical thinking every day through Number Corner!
Number Corner is a daily math experience that brings together important mathematical concepts through short, engaging routines that change each month. These routines give students repeated opportunities to notice, wonder, explain, make connections, and build confidence with numbers.
In October, Mrs. Brink’s learners are busy strengthening their understanding of part-part-whole relationships with numbers to 10, searching for patterns, creating number stories, writing equations, and organizing and interpreting data. The Calendar Manager gets to help lead the class as they explore shapes, make observations about the calendar, and count the days they have been at school.
What makes Number Corner so powerful is that students aren't simply practicing math skills—they are thinking like mathematicians. They are looking for patterns, explaining their reasoning, making predictions, representing their thinking, and connecting new learning to what they already know.
These quick routines may look simple, but they are building a strong mathematical foundation. Through consistent practice and meaningful conversations, students are developing the flexibility and number sense they will use as mathematics becomes more complex.
We love seeing our Horizon Learners engaged in these daily opportunities to think, talk, notice, and discover! A big Horizon Hooray to Mrs. Brink and her first graders for making math meaningful, joyful, and part of every day!
