Mrs. Kraayenbrink has been a strong teacher at Horizon, building a classroom where clear expectations, positive relationships, and purposeful instruction help students succeed. Recently, she shared her expertise with the Horizon staff, demonstrating how the strategies she uses every day can strengthen teaching and learning throughout our school.
Mrs. Kraayenbrink’s approach focuses on making expectations clear, communicating goals to students, and recognizing success. She understands that students are more successful when they know what they are expected to do, what they are working toward, and what success looks like. Whether she is giving short, specific directions, preparing students for transitions, or reinforcing previously learned skills, she creates structure that helps students stay focused and engaged.
One of the most powerful parts of her approach is her emphasis on recognizing and praising the behaviors we want to see rather than calling attention to students who are struggling. By communicating success, celebrating positive choices, and providing students with opportunities to lead, Mrs. Kraayenbrink builds confidence and reinforces expectations in a way that supports both learning and behavior. These intentional practices help reduce disruptions, build student independence, and create a classroom environment where students can be successful.
During her presentation, Mrs. Kraayenbrink shared practical examples and classroom video clips to show how these strategies look in action. Her willingness to open her classroom practice to colleagues gave our staff tangible ideas they can implement immediately.
At Horizon, we believe our school becomes stronger when we learn from one another. Mrs. Kraayenbrink exemplifies this belief by sharing the knowledge and skills she has developed over years of effective teaching. By sharing her strengths with our team, she is helping us grow together, strengthen our instructional practices, and create more opportunities for every Horizon learner to thrive.
